Use the internet to find some illustrations of early music notation, and find out more about how notation developed during this period.

In June 2017 I paid a visit to one of the oldest existing libraries in St Gallen, Switzerland which specialises in the preservation of old manuscripts, including examples of early music notation. These could only be viewed onsite and were under lock and key and also protected from excessive light, so I was not able to take any pictures of the actual ‘scores’. Needless to say, it was absolutely fascinating to see and they were also extremely beautiful. Works of art, illuminated and illustrated by monks.
