Exercise – Musical patronage

Write a short piece (around 500 words) expressing your views on music funding. What

are the advantages and disadvantages of a system of patronage? How do you feel about arts funding in general? Should it be supported by the state or by patrons? Or should artists aim to create work which appeals to the public and is capable of supporting itself financially?

If you know any musicians personally, or have been to see a particular ensemble recently, try to find out how they’re funded. If possible, seek their views on how this impacts on their music.
